I lived in Hawaii for a while. EVERYONE where Hawaiian shirts all the time. Business people, government officials, politicians, like, EVERYONE. I didn’t see a single suit or a person in “business attire” there. The shoes are all also flip-flops/sandals which they call slippers.
Hawaii petitioned to join the US. Them and Alaska fought hard for the right to join. Some 90% of the Hawaiian population voted to join the US. They do bitch about it now though.

Most of the people’s culture was lost a long time ago, and there was a
cultural revival later on where we get a lot of the modern Hawaiian
culture now. I don’t know how much of it is “authentic” old-school
culture though, and how much of it is based on the “idea” of Hawaiian

Polynesian islanders sailed all over the
Pacific for centuries. They were all sorts of badass, and were mind
    blowing crazy good at sailing.
I lived on the big Island, which
is the most “local” of the island cultures. Islanders and Japanese
people are the top of the pecking order there, with white people much,
much lower. If you want to experience being a minority that is
discriminated against in an English speaking, American state, live on
the big island for a while. It’s crazy. I look very white (originally
from the mid-east) and I got all sorts of shit and slurs flung my way
while living there. It was a total trip.
